The dramatic elements within a game provides context to the core gameplay experience. Through the premise, the player is allowed to quickly consume the dramtic elements, like character, story, conflict, background and plot, and move into the game with a solid undestanding about the world their are about to participate within. In many ways, the premise initially establishes the core gameplay experience for the game.
Dramatic elements give context to gameplay, overlaying and integrating the formal elements of the system into a meaningful experience. Basic dramatic elements, like challenge and play, are found in all games. More complicated dramatic techniques, like premise, character and story, are used in many games to explain and enhance the more abstract elements of the formal system, creating a deeper sense of connection for the players and enriching their overall experiences.
Before venturing to say what similarities between them might be, it would help to look more closely at the underlying structure of both of these games. Lets take a look the common structural elements of games.
Creating a video game is not an individual process. Great game designers relish in the opportunity to work on creative teams of artists and choose to shed the constrictive work environment of solitary production. The design process encourages the artists to work within a collaborative team. Through the incubation process, simple ideas are grown into mature designs. This process, one that has historically been used in the graphic design industry, lies at the core of the video game design arena.
